4 Key Things on Nano Brows

If you’ve been keeping up with what’s trending in PMU, then you know that nano brows have been dominating the brow space, and it’s a technique that’s here to stay. This hair stroke technique has been growing in popularity amongst artists and clients worldwide, favored for its hyper-realistic effect and versatility. If this technique has piqued your interest and you’re looking to know more, continue reading to learn the 4 key things on nano brows!

1. What are Nano Brows?

Nano brows on Practice Pad

  • Nano brows are a form of cosmetic tattoo that mimics the look of hair strokes to create hyper-realistic eyebrows.
  • To create nano strokes, a handheld machine is used. This is different from microblading which is done using a manual handheld tool to create hair strokes.
  • There are two different techniques used to create the nano hair stroke:
    • Pixelated Hair Strokes - grazing the needle onto the skin to create soft or bold lines depending on the number of layers you complete.
    • Defined Hair Strokes - penetrating the needle into the skin to create distinct lines.
  • Nano brows are a great alternative to microblading for:
    • Artists who prefer machine techniques to manual techniques.
    • Clients who are sensitive to pain (this will be more comfortable for them than microblading).
    • Clients who are willing to get regular touch-ups (this will fade quicker than microblading).
    • Clients who want a less permanent result (microblading will last longer in the skin than nano brows).

2. Which Clients Are Suitable for Nano Brows?

Suitable:

  • Clients with ‘normal’ aka combination skin i.e. not too dry or too oily, not easily aggravated or sensitive, with no chronic conditions such as acne or rosacea.
  • Client’s with small pores, specifically in the T-Zone area of the face.
  • Clients with no previous PMU who want a natural-looking hair stroke effect.

Not Suitable:

  • Clients prone to eczema, psoriasis, keratosis pilaris, and dermatitis (i.e. skin is constantly flaking, itching, or aggravated) – chances are, their skin is in a constant state of unrest and shedding. In this case, their skin will not hold the pigment well and is not suitable for tattooing.
  • The same goes for conditions like chronic acne and rosacea. The inherent nature of this type of skin causes easy bleeding, which once again means the skin will not retain the pigment very well. Also, the color tends to heal very cool. Frequent touch-ups (every 6 months) is recommended to maintain color on this skin type.
  • If your client has large pores, specifically in the eyebrow region and forehead (aka the T-Zone), the color will fade faster and the retention will not be as great compared to someone with smaller pores and dry skin.
  • People with previous eyebrow tattoos may want to change or fix what they already have. Laser removal prior to the procedure is recommended if the color is still too dark or if they want to change the shape. In general, nano brows are not ideal for clients with an existing tattoo.
  • Other general PMU contraindications, such as pregnancy.

3. Brow Mapping for Nano Brows

Before you get into creating strokes and patterns for nano brows, you need to ensure your brow mapping is as close to perfect as possible. This will give you the framework within which you can create your beautiful nano brows. Always try your best to achieve symmetry when brow mapping. Brows are meant to be sisters, but you should always aim to make them twins!

Follow the guideline below to draw the perfect eyebrow shape for your client.

4. Nano Brows Strokes & Patterns

Once your brow mapping shape is completed, you’ll need to map out the strokes and patterns you’ll create during the procedure. There are several different strokes you may use throughout different parts of the eyebrows while doing the nano brows technique, including:

  • Upward stroke
  • Downward stroke
  • ‘V’ stroke
  • ‘A’ stroke
  • ‘X’ stroke
  • ‘N’ stroke
  • ‘M’ stroke

You’ll need to master each of these strokes on practice pads ahead of working on a client. Get used to doing hundreds of strokes in different directions and shapes so they can flow organically during a procedure.

Once you feel comfortable drawing different strokes, start working on patterns. Patterns can be used to ensure that the nano brows you create look symmetrical and balanced on your client’s face – where the left eyebrow is a reflection of the right eyebrow, flowing naturally.

When practicing patterns, please note that clients can have different hair flows – not all clients will suit the same pattern. Different skin types and ethnicities will have different patterns, e.g. some ethnicities will have naturally fluffier brows, or brows where the hairs grow naturally downwards or sideways. The key to success with this technique is mastering one pattern, then adapting as needed for each client.

Here’s an example of a brow pattern created by Beauté Academy. This type of pattern would be ideal for anyone whose brow hairs naturally grow downwards from the arch point to the tail, with fluffier fronts.
