EU REACH FAQs
What is EU REACH?
EU REACH is a regulation by the European Union (EU), adapted to improve the protection of human health and the environment from risks. It applies to all chemical substances; not only those used in industrial processes but also in our day-to-day lives, for example in cleaning products, paints, as well as articles such as clothes, furniture, cosmetics, and colors used in permanent makeup (PMU) and body tattoo.
What effect does EU REACH Regulation have?
On Jan 4, 2022 under the EU REACH Regulation, the European Union (EU) has restricted the use of certain chemicals in tattoo ink and permanent makeup inks (PMU) within the European Union.
This affects every pigment company selling products within the EU. Companies will be required to reformulate their pigments in order to comply with the EU REACH Regulations.
Who is affected by EU REACH and can I still use the pigments?
The change in the EU REACH Regulation only impacts countries within the European Union. Changes do not impact artists in the USA and Canada or anywhere else in the world.
What pigment colors are affected by EU REACH?
Certain ingredients such as isopropyl alcohol found in tattoo and permanent makeup inks are no longer allowed. Many pigment color ingredients have been banned as an effect of EU REACH Regulations.
Colors mainly affecting Perma Blend and Tina Davies pigments:
YELLOW 14 - CI 21095
RED 269 - CI 12466
BLUE 15 - CI 74160
GREEN 7 - CI 1328-53-6
For reference, here's an overview of the pigments no longer allowed with EU REACH.
Ink colors available before EU REACH ban
Ink colors available after EU REACH ban
Why were these ingredients banned?
The authorities examined the possible health risks (such as skin sensitizers) of these chemicals and investigated the availability of safer alternatives. Although there has not been any documented adverse reactions, the aim is to make the ingredients used in tattoos and permanent makeup safer for use.
How can I tell what pigment has these ingredients?
